March 15, 2014 Symposium (Afternoon)

Emerging Technologies Review

Symposium Reflection (March 15, 2014 - afternoon)

The first speaker for the afternoon session was Mr. Ferdie Cacdac wherein he entitled his presentation "Fire Suppression System and Construction Technologies". I think that it's really important for us to know these kinds of technologies especially for big companies who have valuable data. Added to that, the number of cases involving fire here in the Philippines is growing every day.

The second speaker was our very own Enterprise Architecture professor, Mr. Lee Mojado where he entitled his presentation "Big Data Emerging Technologies." Big data refers to a HUGE amount of data that needs to be processed and how it will be used by a company or an organization. The solution that the speaker had was HAVEn which basically solves how this huge amount of data can be collected, stored, analyzed, and processed into useful information. I think this technology is really useful because every day more and more data are being uploaded and stored on the internet.

The third speaker came from our group, which was Ms. Lea Capati wherein she entitled her presentation "Business Intelligence through the Use of Different Information Systems such as Traffic Management, Billing, and Sewerage" in which she tackled the different projects that are currently being developed to solve traffic and billing problems. She first talked about the traffic management systems that will be using signals and sensors, so in case of emergencies, maintenance would no longer have to personally be on site to fix the problem. Next, she talked about the billing system where a device will be used to scan and automatically generate bill charges. It was a really interesting topic for me since she even brought the handheld device for us to see.

The fourth and last speaker was Mr. Jason Acidre wherein he entitled his presentation "Inbound Marketing Technology through SEO". I was really interested in his presentation because it had a Breaking Bad theme. Moving on, the speaker first explained to us what SEO (seach engine optimization) meant. Basically, it is the search process of Yahoo and Google where these two will display the most relevant topics the user searches for.

Emerging Technologies Review

Symposium Reflection (March 15, 2014 - morning)

March 15, 2014 - the last seminar that we will be having regarding the emerging technologies in the health and business industry.

The first speaker was Mr. Romeo Lee wherein he entitled his presentation "Me and My Mobile Gadgets: Healthcare Within Reach". The speaker wanted to put healthcare in the mobile phones of people today for convenience so that people wouldn't have to personally go to the hospitals or health care centers just to get their treatments. What really struck me the most in his presentation was when he wanted to develop a mobile application that would prevent or stop people from committing suicide since this is one of the main reasons of deaths in the world.

The second speaker was Dr. Maria Luisa Enriquez wherein she entitled her presentation "Emerging Technologies in Cancer Diagnosis". The speaker presented the different emerging technologies when it comes to treating different kinds of sickness. One was the intelligent pills that can only target certain kinds of diseases; another was the bionic pancreas which is a device attached to the body of the person and decides how much insulin should be produced. But her main focus was on FISH (Fluorescence in Situ Hybridization) wherein the person could see better images of what cancer cells (leukemia, breast, and bladder) look like under the microscope.

The third and last speaker was the brother of one of my close friends, Mr. Roberto Noche III. wherein he entitled his presentation "NanoMedicine for Cancer". The speaker started off by giving us an introduction about pancreatic cancer and why it is hard to detect this. Then he explained one of the emerging technologies being used which is the nanotubes and the adding of anti bodies that can detect cancer. He mentioned one of the advantages of this treatment is its price, unlike other cancer treatments which can start at a minimum of $800. What shocked me the most is that this technology was developed by a 15 year old!

Symposium Reflection (March 8, 2014 - afternoon)

After the first set of speakers in the morning came our set of speakers in the afternoon where they will be discussing the different emerging technologies in the business world.

The first speaker was by Mr. Michael Garcia of Terradata wherein he entitled his presentation "Emergence of Data Warehousing  and its Importance in the Business Industry Today." My first reaction was, I didn't really know what he would be talking about because I only heard the term data warehousing before. I never really knew what it meant or how important it is in the business industry today, so I really focused on the speaker because that was my chance to know more about this topic, especially coming from a professional speaker. The speaker started off by telling us that data warehousing is somewhat closely related to business intelligence because the amount of data gathered from warehousing is being processed by these business intelligence systems. The speaker mentioned that data warehousing is important because it allows a company or an organization to collect, store, process, analyze, and protect data properly in order to make critical business decisions that will affect the company.

The second speaker was Ms. Cecile Ang where she talked about the SWEEP card, a reloadable cash card that offers fours different features, unlike other cash cards. She mentioned that the card uses RFID in case the user loses his or her card, while making sure that the money inside is still safe and locked. She also mentioned that with the use of this card, issues such as theft in the future can be lessened, if not removed completely; but, it may take a longer time for this to be implemented in the Philippines because of the technology and financial issues our country has.

The last speaker we had was Mr. Celmer Santos wherein he entitled his presentation "Emerging Technology Products of Jupiter Systems Relevant to Business and Consumers" wherein he presented some products for companies who want to be innovative in terms of technology, especially companies that are just starting in the technology era.

Emerging Technologies Review

Symposium Reflection (March 8, 2014 - morning)

March 8, was the second to the last set of speakers that we will be having for the course. Despite this, I was still looking forward to the speakers of the other class as well as ours because after all of the talks, I still wanted to learn more on the emerging technologies in the health and business field.

Moving on, the first speaker for the morning session was Dr. Alfredo P. San Andres Jr. where he entitled his presentation "Latest Concept of Oral Health Care." Personally, at first, I didn't want to listen because I have a fear when it comes to teeth and dentists. But when I listened more, I became more and more interested especially when the speaker discussed about remineralization because the word was so fancy. The speaker explained his main topic by presenting the different emerging technologies in the dentistry field nowadays and he also mentioned about people going into whitening treatments just to have the perfect set of teeth they want. Having said this, I now learned to take better care of my teeth.

The second speaker was a professor in the College of Science, Dr. Eric Punzalan, where he entitled his presentation "A Healthy Chemiphysical Solution." I didn't quite understand his presentation because I'm not really a fan of chemistry. But I think the speaker discussed about how the old medicines before were improved to make it more beneficial for people. He also mentioned how certain types of chemicals can be changed in order to be able to adjust to a specific kind of matter.

The last speaker for the morning session was Dr. Jerome Palaganas wherein he entitled his presentation "The Future of Health Care" by focusing on the top 10 emerging technologies in that sector.

Overall, I really enjoyed the speakers for the morning session because they were able to discuss clearly their specializations as well as the emerging technologies in that particular field.

March 7, 2014 Symposium (Afternoon)

Emerging Technologies Review

Symposium Reflection (March 7, 2014 - Afternoon)

The first speaker for the afternoon session was Dr. Ayedee Domingo where he entitled his presentation "LEARNS: Leprosy Alert & Response Network Systems". Basically,  this system serves as a tool for managing the Leprosy cases here in the Philippines. It uses different technologies such as LAMP, which is an open source web development platform; the system also runs in Android run devices; as well as the Globe SMS and MMS API where the user can take pictures of the affected person. It was somewhat the same as what we, as Information Systems students, develop. We make a system that gathers, collects, and processes data. We then base the gathered data in making and in generating reports that will be used in decision making. One of the features the system has was the ability for patients to consult with their doctors without personally meeting with them. Such a system should be funded by the government because this will surely be beneficial to the society.

The second speaker is currently a faculty here in De La Salle University, wherein she teaches chemistry. She is Dr. Maria Carmen Tan and her presentation was entitled "Surface Plasma Resonance" I was really intrigued by the title of the presentation but soon got a bit disappointed because I couldn't understand a word she was saying. The speaker used chemistry jargons in explaining her presentation.  But, I was still able to appreciate it because of the pictures that she used and I think that she will be able to give a big contribution to the university when it comes to developing drugs.

The third and last speaker for the afternoon session was Dr. Maria Angela Cumagun where she entitled her presentation "Skin Tightening Lasers: What's New?" I found her topic really interesting because aside from having flawless skin herself, she was also able to get the audience's attention. She presented the different technologies being used in the dermatology field. She provided before and after pictures of  people who have undergone the non-invasive surgical procedure because of the desire of people to tighten their skin and make them look younger.

Overall, I really liked the presentations because these I found the topics really interesting and I was also able to relate with the topics being presented, except the chemistry topic.

March 7, 2014 Symposium (Morning)

Symposium Reflection (March 7, 2014 - Morning)

The morning symposium seminar on March 7, 2014 was the first time I will be attending the other class' seminar. Since their theme was on the emerging technologies in health, it immediately got my attention since my first choice in college was really Med Tech. Moving on, I am still very grateful and I consider myself lucky because I was able to attend the second batch of the other class' seminars.

The first speaker was a gynecologist named Dr. Julia Beltran wherein she entitled her presentation, "What's New in Women's Health?" Of course, I found myself easily being able to relate to the topic since this was about the health of women.  She started off her presentation by discussing the different female organs, especially the reproductive organs, and what the functions were. I think she did this because almost half of the audience were men and Dr. Beltran wanted to make sure that everybody will know and understand once she begins her presentation. Afer this, she then started to discuss the different emerging technologies being used in pregnancy. The scanning of the womb is now made even better because the images being produced are of better quality. She also mentioned that one of the emerging technologies when it comes to surgery would be the robots. In some countries, robots are already the ones who are performing surgery to the patient. This makes it convenient for the surgeons because they don't have to be personally there in the operating room. However, this kind of technology is only present in one hospital in the Philippines, which is St. Lukes Medical Center.

The second speaker came in the afternoon session already because he couldn't make it in the morning. He is Dr. Gil Nonato Santos and his presentation was entitled "Nanotechnology in Health". Dr. Santos presented the science behind nanotechnology and how this technology can be used in glasses, especially windows. I found this technology really interesting and beneficial because not only does it protect our windows from germs, but is also prevents heat from coming in, making sure that we always feel cool.

Overall, I really enjoyed the two sessions because I was able to learn so much from the two speakers.

March 1, 2014 Symposium (Afternoon)

Emerging Technologies Review

Symposium Reflection (March 1, 2014)

On March 1, 2014, we were asked to attend a seminar on the emerging technologies in the business or corporate world. Since I arrived late in school, I only managed to attend the last talk for that day.

The last speaker was a fresh graduate of DLSU and he talked about the SAP GRC 10.0. This speaker caught my attention because before he even started his presentation, he began by saying that being in the IT industry doesn't mean that one is already or will forever be a developer. Being in the IT industry can offer so much more possibilites and opportunites for the less skilled in programming. He mentioned that only a small part of the IT industry comes in developing or in coding. He mentioned that it is really up to ourselves to pursue what we really want in order to make innovations that will benefit the society. Coming up with these innovations doesn't necessarily mean that we have to develop and code these by ourselves; rather, we come up with the idea or ideas that will help solve the current problems that the society is experiencing. The coding and developing part will be the job of the developers.
